The Lyric Theatre’s April 11 show delivered exactly what its growing reputation promises: an intimate, high-energy night where community and performance feed off each other. Algal Bloom’s return to Granity felt less like a tour stop and more like a home-coming, drawing a crowd of around 80: Buller locals alongside an energised fan-base who made the trip from Selwyn.
From the outset, the band set a lively tone, moving seamlessly through a dance-forward mix of R&B, rock, and pop covers. The venue amplified every beat, turning the space into a shared pulse of movement and sound. What stood out wasn’t just the tightness of the performance, but the reciprocity - by mid-set, the audience wasn’t watching, they were part of it.
There’s real gratitude owed for this one-stop tour: for bringing live music, dance-heavy rhythms, and genuine aroha to Granity - and for doing so with the kind of intent that makes The Lyric feel like more than a venue. It’s no surprise the band count it among their favourite stages and Granity among their favourite audiences.
By the end, it was clear this wasn’t just a gig, but a collective experience - exactly what The Lyric does best.
