From cuppa to community: The gathering that keeps giving back

The Lyric Theatre continues to prove that its greatest asset is its people. What began as a simple weekly gathering has evolved into a cornerstone of community life, with the “Morning Tea and Natter” now running every Friday morning since early 2024.

Hosted by the ever-dedicated Nicki Banks, the event has grown steadily, attracting a strong and loyal following. Each week sees a mix of new faces and familiar ones - recent arrivals finding their footing alongside long-standing locals - drawn together by the promise of good conversation and genuine connection.

More than just a social catch-up, the gathering plays an important role in strengthening community well-being. It offers a warm, welcoming space that helps combat isolation while fostering meaningful relationships in a relaxed, inclusive environment.

What sets this initiative apart is its generosity of spirit. Attendees don’t just show up—they give back. Proceeds from the weekly sessions are regularly donated to local causes, with decisions made collectively by those who attend. To date, the group has returned an impressive $950 to community organisations, reinforcing the “by the people, for the people” ethos that defines The Lyric.

There is also real gratitude owed to Nicki, whose week-in, week-out commitment keeps the doors open and the kettle on. Her quiet dedication underpins the success of Morning Tea & Natter and reflects a deep, genuine care for her community.

It’s a simple idea, executed with care - and its impact continues to grow.
