There are bands that play songs, and there are bands that build worlds. The Dorado Experiment falls squarely into the latter.
Returning to Granity for Matariki Weekend, the Nelson outfit looked every bit at home on The Lyric stage. In many ways, this was a homecoming. Since their debut West Coast appearance earlier this year, Granity has become the band's honorary second home, and the welcome they received made it clear the feeling is mutual.
Formed in Whakatū Nelson in 2024, The Dorado Experiment wear their influences proudly without ever sounding like a tribute act. Echoes of Led Zeppelin's swagger, Pink Floyd's expansive soundscapes, Cream's improvisation and The Doors' psychedelic edge all bubble beneath the surface, yet the result is something refreshingly modern and unmistakably their own.

If February's show introduced the band, The Matariki Tour was the statement of intent.
Much of the set was brand new, with fresh material sitting comfortably alongside fan favourites. Songs stretched, breathed and twisted into hypnotic jams before crashing back into huge, riff-driven choruses. There were moments of delicate restraint, only to be followed by walls of fuzz-drenched guitar, thunderous rhythm and soaring vocals that filled every corner of the theatre. The confidence between the five musicians was impossible to miss - they trusted one another to take risks, and the audience happily came along for the ride.

The Dorado Experiment are evolving at an astonishing pace. If this performance is any indication, they're no longer simply a promising psychedelic rock band from Nelson - they're becoming one of the country's most compelling live acts.
