A Celebration of the Ages
The Lyric Theatre, Granity, Inc’s end of year fancy dress party took place on Saturday, December 2nd at the Theatre. Locals and out-of-towners turned up to share a meal and rock the wet and windy night away. It was indeed a Celebration of the Ages, with Samurai, hippies, gangsters, flappers, witches, French naval officers and rock-and-rollers, to name but a few. Prizes for the best costumes (a bottle of champagne for each, generously donated by Christine and Ricardo) went to Meg (from the Ngakawau Store) for her flapper outfit (including her grandmothers’ real fox fur stole) and to Timmi for her fabulous 50’s outfit. Our favourite was the young punk rocker with the amazing haircut (a future Sid Vicious maybe?)… but unfortunately, he was too young to drink champagne.
The food selection was nearly as diverse as the costumes on display and our bar was staffed by Luke and Emma from Shortjaw Brewery – a special thanks to them and to Annie Bell (and daughter Lilly), for pouring the drinks all night and allowing our volunteers and committee members a chance to let their hair down… (those that still have some, anyway).

A slideshow of original turn-of-the-century photos of Buller in days gone by attracted friends, families and couples to have their photos taken – something, we think, we'll definitely do again in future.

The night opened with Paipo - the West Coast Wax-Slinger - laying down groovy-cool tracks from the 60's, progressing through the 80's, then kicking into gear with Westport 5-piece Band Waiata, covering classic songs, from rock n’ roll to Pink Floyd, from The Beatles to Fleetwood Mac. Waiata finishing the night with a superb rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”, with vocals harmonised by our very own Rob Ord, proving his great versatility as a singer - what a beautiful surprise!
This event marks the final social event for the Theatre for 2023, although don’t forget our Christmas Market Day on Saturday 16th December.
We would like to thank all our members, volunteers and supporters for their tremendous effort in setting up the new society and helping to get it off the ground. There have been challenges, for sure, and more to come, but so far, very good. Next year, we have a packed programme of events - we invite you to subscribe to our event mailing list here - along with a lot of incredible ideas we're putting in motion to realise our vision of The Lyric Theatre as not just an entertainment venue, but also an important community hub for Granity and the Northern Buller area.
