If you love retro rock and soul music but you didn’t come to Moonflower; you might have missed one of our favourite double-header acts of 2024.
Supported by Veranda Cocktail, returning after their epic showdown in April supporting Algal Bloom, Moonflower took to the stage and rocked the night away.
From a selection of wickedly good original tunes to the occasional reimagined cover, Moonflower brought a night of groovy, danceable music to the theatre.
The Christchurch 3-piece featured Nicole Schaap - lead vocals and drums, Hamish Ellis - guitar and Josh Fairless - bass. They created entirely exciting music inspiried by 60's and 70's soul and classic rock with a heavy twist. Nicole, with her incredibly powerful voice, fair lifted the roof off the theatre and reminded us all of Aretha Franklin, Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane) and Ann Wilson (Heart).
As the night rocked on, people got up to dance and soon The Lyric Theatre was, once again, a place of funky music and hive of social activity. Food and drink flowed readily and Moonflower catered to the shouts of “encore”, gifting us a few more precious minutes of brilliant music.
They played until late into the night and even had some fittingly cool merch to sell at the end.
As attendees filtered out the doors with well-danced feet and hoarse voices from singing along, the sentiments were the same; another awesome night out-country!
Thanks so much to Moonflower and Veranda Cocktail who both came all the way from Christchurch to share their gifts of music with the world, we look forward to having them back again in December!
A huge shoutout to our wonderful volunteers who kept everything going smoothly and made sure all the attendees had a great night.
