There was love and reverence in the air last Saturday as mothers, daughters, sisters and grandmothers (and a handful of gents) arrived en-masse for our first matinee event, right in time for Mother’s Day.
Opened by the exceptionally skilled Waiata Koha community choir from Greymouth, the theatre was filled with haunting harmonies, marvellous melodies and alluring anthems. Both acts incorporated beautiful waiata as well as music from across the ages. Once Waiata Koha had set the tone with their vocal talents, the O Sister trio combined their voices and instruments for a performance that blew us away.
O Sister, comprising Deb Pearson, Kirsten Crabtree and Jenny Daniell, carried us on a journey through beautiful acappella and accompanied songs, a medley of covers and original pieces. They brought together their wonderful three-part vocal harmony with guitar, bass and flute to fill our hearts with the magic of music. The passion for their craft was evident and the trio got people on their feet, joining a percussive song that swelled throughout the theatre.
From folk melodies to fireside favourites, O Sister dazzled, amazed and enchanted us. Their haunting acappella harmonies brought tears to our eyes and their instrumental arrangements had our feet tapping.
Thank you again to Deb, Kirsten and Jenny for bringing such joyous music to the theatre and sharing your unique gifts with us all.
